SMR Deployment – A Shot in the Arm.

A big shot in the arm for the nuclear sector with announcement that Wylfa has been chosen as the first site for the UK’s small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear power station designed by Rolls Royce SMR.

Construction is anticipated to start in 2026 on this £2.5bn project lead by publicly owned Great British Energy – Nuclear. Power from the initial three reactors is expected to be on the grid by the mid 2030’s, delivering low carbon energy to 3 million homes. The plan is to have up to eight SMR’s on the site which will help energy security, generating thousands of high skilled jobs in throughout the UK, and supporting a growing supply chain in the sector.

Brian Allan, Board Member of Nuclear PSG and Managing Director of QSI Consultancy Group said “It is fantastic news that Wylfa has been chosen as the first site to host the Rolls Royce SMR’s. Having been involved in the nuclear sector for many years it is great to see that the UK nuclear renaissance continues to gather momentum for the next generation. Exciting times ahead for all engaged including members of the Nuclear PSG.”

The Nuclear PSG will look forward to working closely with all those involved in the SMR programme including Rolls-Royce SMR, Great British Energy – Nuclear, businesses in the supply chain and industry partners.
